Accessibility
General Tips
- Keep layouts simple and uncluttered.
- Use plain, clear language.
- Make sure key information is not only shown in colour.
- Use consistent styles for headings and body text.
- Keep line length under 70 characters of body copy per line. Measure the line length with a site such as https://www.charactercountonline.com/ If it’s too long, enlarge the font size, create two columns, or/and increase the margins.
- Body text at least 10 points, ideally larger.
- Ensure strong contrast for text and logos (see diagram).
- Use headings and subheadings to guide the reader.
Web
- Add alt text descriptions for all images.
- Limit use of ALL CAPS.
- Limit emoji use.
- Ensure good colour contrast for text and backgrounds.
- Use clear, descriptive link text (avoid “click here”) without more context
Measuring Contrast for Accessibility
If you're unsure about the contrast between the text or logos and background, please reach out to the communications team. You can also try using a free online tool such as https://accessibleweb.com/color-contrast-checker/ to measure the colours. You’ll receive a clear report of how adequate the contrast is. While the tool is based on web applications, it is generally helpful for print, too.
